Chapter Twelve

Drake took in the scene and realized he’d stepped into enemy territory. If looks could kill he’d be full of daggers right now. “Uh, I brought you a peace offering, Sarina. But I see you’re in the middle of something.”

“Ever think of calling ahead?” Mona asked in her best “take that” voice.

Drake put his box on the long table beside the others and then glanced at Sarina. “No. Never occurred to me. I never tried to call ahead at least ten times. Maybe Sarina wasn’t answering her phone.”

“He’s right. I got busy,” she said, looking adorably guilty. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t have time to call you back.”

“Right.” He eyed the man and woman sitting at the table while they sent him non-welcoming glares.

“Besides, why are you here?” Mona asked. “We’re kind of in the middle of something.”

“She asked for space, remember?” Kayla said, her eyes blazing. “So yes, why are you here?”

“Can you call off your lady ninjas?” he asked, his grin tight with control while he stared at Sarina.

Sarina moved between Drake and her stern-looking friends. “What do you want, Drake?”

“Can we talk somewhere else?”

The man with the white hair stood and extended his hand. “Samuel Henley. Desk clerk and jack-of-all-trades around here. If Sarina doesn’t want you here, I’m the one who’ll be escorting you to the door.”

The older woman glared even more. “Emma Patterson. And I’ll be the one to slam it against your backside.”

“Wow, your friends are charming,” he replied to Sarina. “Could I have a minute?”

She looked at the others. “Eat and discuss. I’ll be back soon.” Motioning him to the front parlor, she whirled in front of the empty fireplace. “Drake, this has to stop. I’ve decided a few things today and one of them is that I need to do a lot of research on the history of Falling Blossoms so I can find a buyer who will appreciate this place…the way it is and has been for well over one-hundred years.”

“And that someone isn’t me, right?”

She gave him a look full of regret and bitterness. “Now you’re catching on.”

“So you called in the troops to help you get this place together before the party that’s happening in, what…about five days?”

“Yes, there is that. But we’re covering both tonight. I still intend to file for historical status on Falling Blossoms.”

Drake’s heart stilled, not because her plans would take months and she might be turned down. But because he admired her spunk and determination and wished he could be part of her camp. “I see. Then that’s it, I reckon.”

“I’m not ready to sell, Drake,” she said, her tone soft but sure. “You don’t have to hang around waiting. You’re free to go back to San Antonio.”

He nodded and turned toward the door. For once, he didn’t care what his father would say or do because now he did care about Sarina. So in that mindset, he whirled back around. “Sarina?”

She stood where he’d left her, looking defeated instead of triumphant. “What?”

“I promised you I’d help out around here to get things in shape for the party.
